Its sensibility for basophilic compounds allows to differentiate the neuronal cell compartments like nucleoli and nuclei.
Neuronal voluminous nuclei with similar dye affinity are equally stained in purple. Moreover, the cresyl violet staining allows to highlight glial cells.
Cresyl violet staining is used in neurosciences to analyze neuron variations in various pathological cases.
