Mammaglobin, a 93-amino acid glycoprotein, is encoded by a gene first identified in a study directed at the isolation of novel human breast cancer-associated genes (1). It is highly specific for most breast cancers, and can be useful in detecting circulating or metastatic breast cancer (2) It should be noted that some expression is seen in normal breast, although expression is markedly increased in breast carcinoma and is directly correlated with a higher grade. (3). Studies also suggest that mammaglobin may be a more sensitive marker for breast carcinoma compared to GCDFP-15 (4) and should be added to an immunohistochemical panel as appropriate.
